In 2001, Typhoon Toraji triggered enormous landslides and severely damaged the Hotel. However, it also pushed the female lion on the left side towards the male lion, making them stand shoulder to shoulder like a destined couple.

During the five dark years after the disaster, this pair of stone lions stood together as they faced the aftermath like a loving couple supporting each other through hardships. General Manager Li-Yu Lee was deeply touched by this scene and eventually held an engagement ceremony for them on February 14, 2007 (Valentine’s Day) to commemorate their portrayal of unswerving love with the mountains as witnesses.
